arable farming

Grain production has always been part of the farm’s history and is an important part of our biodynamic farm management. The grain produced here provides food for humans and animals.

Fokhol Gård is situated on a slightly exposed hill with a view of Mjøsa. Our 110 hectares lie almost entirely around the farm, providing an optimal working base and ensuring short distances.

We produce summer and winter grain, mainly rye, wheat, emmer, spelt, oats and barley in edible quality, as well as fodder for our animals, on our arable land of around 300 daa.

The grain, more precisely up to ? tons, can be stored in our own spacious grain storage facility until it is sold and can be dried with hot and cold air for optimal storage. This is a great advantage, as is the fact that we are self-mechanized in arable farming and can therefore carry out all work – from soil cultivation to sowing and harvesting – independently and autonomously. We also have a small cleaning facility that can clean the grain for next year’s sowing.

At the moment, we sell most of our grain through the organic wholesaler Norganic. Our vision is to set up our own grain processing facility and to be able to supply ourselves and our visitors in the guest house and farm store with grain and flour. So far, we have been using the cooperation with the neighboring farm Alm Østre to clean and grind our own grain to food quality. So far we offer emmer, wheat and rye flour and whole grain in the farm store.

Due to glacial soil movements and the moraine that cut through the area around Mjøsa during the Ice Age, releasing a large amount of minerals through abrasion, our soil is extremely rich in nutrients, but also very stony. The frosts in winter bring numerous stones to the surface every year. The good nutrient base is a blessing that provides the region with an excellent basis for agriculture and makes the area one of Norway’s most important supply areas.

We also support our good soil with the manure from our animals in the spirit of biodynamic circular economy, in order to provide the grain and other crops with an optimal nutrient base.

Due to the slightly elevated location, the land is often exposed to wind and water erosion. Our aim here is to make our land structures more sustainable, reduce the size of our fields and intersperse them with hedges, embankments, trees and ponds. Historically, there were already ponds on the farm and this year we plan to create two new ponds. These measures help to keep our important natural resources of water and soil on our land and also provide a good habitat for the region’s wildlife.
